Now to be honest, at first, way before I had ventured into my plant-based diet, smoothies for me were equal to milkshakes……yeah I know. Smoothies just weren’t something I did or drank. Not even if they were packed with sweet berries or splashed which maple syrup. Which is weird, since I am weak for sweet things.
Anyhow, fast-forward a couple of years and smoothies became more and more common in my daily consumption, especially for breakfast. They were time-saving, quick and I didn’t have to spend all morning cooking, which was perfect.
At this point, I started to peak more and more curiously in the general direction of the green smoothies. Still, I thought they were something for the yoga gurus, or any other [insert name here] group that I didn’t know anything about but still had preconceptions about at the time.
The first green smoothie I tried was not good at all. It was a horrible mixture of spinach, kale, beetroot and some juice. I don’t remember which fruit. Sure it was probably healthy and more than good for you, but my god it didn’t taste nice. That scared me away from the green smoothies for a while but I didn’t cut the ties altogether. Slowly I gravitated towards them again and started to experiment on my own a little bit.
When searching for a way to get the smoothie creamy I stumbled upon a ripe avocado lying around in the kitchen and when I threw that into the blender I really thought that I found the silver bullet for creamy green smoothies. This avocado broccoli apple smoothie is no exception.
Some of you might not like the taste of raw broccoli too much. I know for a fact that some people think it tastes a bit like dirt. I like it though, but if you want the taste to be a little bit more non-edgy so to speak you can steam the broccoli a couple of minutes before blending. Just make sure that they cool down to at least room temperature (colder is better) before you blend all the ingredients.
The preparation of the avocado broccoli apple smoothie couldn’t be easier. Just add all the ingredients, except water/ice, and start to blend. Add water/ice gradually until you have a consistency that you’re happy with.
Now, don’t do like I do and wait until you try your first green smoothie, make it now!
