During the years I lived in India and Bangladesh I came to know and love their spice culture. Everything just tastes so much and the different curries and masalas give every dish its signature taste and feel. This particular garam masala spice mix is a quick and easy way for you to make it on your own.
Traditionally garam masala is made by first roasting the whole spices and then grinding it to a powder. Feel free to try this, but if you’re like me and don’t always have the time this quick and easy way to make the garam masala spice mix will be a great alternative.
Why make your own garam masala spice mix?
The main benefit of making your own spice mix, regardless of what type of spice mix it is, is that you are in control of what’s in it. It’s not uncommon for store-bought spice mixes to contain sugar or any other type of flavour enhancer, as well as preservatives or artificial colouring. And we don’t want that, do we?
Another benefit of making your own garam masala spice mix is that you can make a big batch that lasts a long time. If you keep it in an airtight container it holds up for a very long time. This gives you the option to add the spices to your favourite dishes to give them some of that Indian subcontinent flavours.

It is very simple to make your own garam masala spice mix, just put all the spices in a bowl and mix them so that they are all combined. As long as you keep the ratios between the spices you can make as much (or little) as you need.
